Lexigram of Emotions

Lexigrams (words) of emotions allow you to explore feelings in action, rather than just talking about them. After laying images out the emotions lexigram on the floor (including an option for “other”), you provide participants a prompt (see 2 examples below), and invite them to physically place themselves next to the word that best represents their response. You can then invite them to share in clusters, and then share out loud with the group. (Note: these can also be used in individual, couples, family, classroom and organizational meetings.)

Rather than just sitting and talking, lexigrams drive momentum in the warm up, and help participants clarify their internal experience. Providing options for emotions can be especially helpful with those who have difficulty finding words to describe their experience.

Examples of lexigram prompts for emotions are: “Go stand by the emotion that best represents how you’re feeling today” or “Go stand by the emotion that best represents how you want to feel by the end of this session.”
